TheMk5 is fairly reliable, especially the 2009 as it has the newer TSI engine (the FSI was known for timing tensioner failures grenading the engine). It probably won't be as reliable or cheap to maintain as a Civic, but it won't be unreasonable. You get what you pay for in terms of performance.

Realistically you aren't going to have much more issues then you would with a GTI - except the Haldex. If you maintain it according to what is recommended, and doing the service PROPERLY, it will be fine. I've done my haldex at 34k (when I bought the car) and just now at 55K (pre big 60k).
