Jan 2, 2006. #4. put yer multi meter over the battery with the ign off ,check reading then start the engine . with ign off and a full battery you should have about 13.2 volts with engine running you need to have between 13.5 and 15 volts.. i wouldn't want to be messing around with meter leads that close to the fan
Overdrive! Dec 10, 2005. #1. My charging light came on suddenly tonight after having a new alternator for a week. The belt was fine but the lamp stayed brightly lit even with all accessories and lights out. Disconnecting the large cable that feeds back to the battery from terminal B+, I measured the output from the alternator as 3.5 volts.
The old Lucas serp belt pully should fit the new alternator. I decided to get a new 4-groove pulley designed to fit GM alternators. Found it on alternatorparts.com for $15. The alternator kit from mgcars includes pigtail and v-belt pulley (good for pre-'93) and the alternator housing has already is pre-rotated 90degrees. 1997 land rover discovery alternator wont charge my battery, installed new battery, alternator and still having problems, i have checked batt cables and thats ok, also had my alternator tested and it passed but when i install the alt and check volts its about 12 which is the batt volts. Also my tachometer isn't working.
The D4 3.0lt is just that little bit harder to do over a D3 2.7lt (yes believe it or not Land Rover made another job harder to do). The signal wire on a D4 ends up on the positive side of battery and looks like its some little wire thats been added for something, I would make sure its still connected, I have seen them broken or simply left off for some reason.
Make sure you measure from the actual battery positive post and not the wiring. The reason for this is to isolate any possible contact issues between the alternator and the battery.
